Has your computer been giving you trouble lately? It’s frustrating when a device doesn’t work up to your expectations. And, of course, it happens at the worst of times. Computers slow down over time, and you start to notice when it interferes with your use.
Slowness is one of the most common issues users face. Luckily, you may not have to go through the trouble of bringing your device to a shop for repair. First, try these six steps to troubleshoot your computer’s slowness.
Software updates are created to fix small bugs, increase security measures, and improve the quality of your device. It’s recommended to update your software as soon as the upgrade is available. Keeping your device up to date will ensure you have the best software available, increase computer security, and it could fix bugs that cause your device to slow down.
Sometimes the classic “turn it off and back on” trick works for computer slowness. Many people don’t try this easy hack before bringing it to a specialist. This is the first thing they will try, and if you haven’t yet, you’ll look pretty silly! Rebooting your computer and completely shutting it down allows the computer to restart and refresh.
It’s also recommended you shut down your computer every time you’re done using it. While it might be annoying to reopen all your windows and tabs, it saves the computer quality for when you’re actually using the device. Leaving your computer running 24/7 will kill the battery and overall usage.
It’s amazing how much the average person downloads and moves to the trash bin on their desktop. You might not even realize it! Take a minute to clear your trash bin and download folders. This should clear up space on your computer, which will improve your device’s speed.

While you’re at it, you can check the rest of your folders for unneeded files, photos, and folders to move to the trash bin. Just remember to empty your trash bin again after clearing out other folders!
Apps take up a ton of space on your device. Many devices come with preinstalled apps that you may not use. Take some time to go through the apps on your device and decide if you need them. Delete the apps you don’t use, and be mindful of the apps you install in the future. Only download apps you know you’ll use consistently.
Viruses are the biggest killers of computer speed. You can learn how to check for viruses on your device here. If your computer detects a virus, you may need to install anti-virus software or take your computer to a repair shop to get it removed. McAfee and Norton are great anti-virus software you can download to protect your device.
Clearing your browser and system caches can improve performance by reducing load speeds. Caches aren’t bad for your computer; they store data for future use and allow your computer to run optimally. However, caches need to be cleared once in a while to avoid using too much storage.
