Entrepreneur’s Workspace: Increasing Productivity

Most entrepreneurs work from home, or in a shared workspace. Therefore, they must have an environment that will increase productivity. Despite the temptation of sitting on the couch with a laptop on your lap, this isn’t a very productive way to sit and work as it is far too relaxing to keep concentrated on your work. If you are an entrepreneur, you should have an office set-up with a desk and office chair if you want to work productively.

The environment we work in can have huge effects on how good our work output is. Although a desk and office chair are considered to be essential parts of a productive work-from-home environment, everyone will have personal preferences as to what we need in our surroundings to work effectively.

In this article, we will explore how we can increase productivity in our entrepreneurial workspace and what items we can add to our environment to get the most out of our working day.

Colour psychology

The colour we use in our working environment can have a significant impact on several factors, such as moods, emotions and productivity. Choosing the right colour for your entrepreneurial workspace can make you work better and create an atmosphere that makes you want to work.

Having a blue colour scheme is said to increase office efficiency, yellow increases creativity, green creates calmness and red stimulates and makes us feel active.

Depending on the kind of business you are an entrepreneur of, you should decorate your workspace with a colour scheme that invokes a mood that aligns with your field of work. If you don’t want to paint the walls with your chosen colour, you could inject that colour into the workspace through luxury cushions to give the space a more comforting feel.

Flexible workspace

A flexible workspace is a type of environment that allows for multiple places of work throughout the day. This means that employees can work in a place that they think works best for them and matches their preferences. If you are an entrepreneur, you should create a workspace where you can work in multiple different rooms throughout the day, as this can increase creativity.

Using this strategy makes it easier for a business to adapt and change based on what is desired, as there is far more freedom than a regular office.

Creating a flexible workspace will empower employees, embrace diversity and consider wellbeing. These will all make for a much more productive workspace. Prioritizing functionality over style can help your strategy and improve daily operations. Deciding what function will depend on who works at your business, and as an entrepreneur, you can get creative with how you want to achieve this functionality.

Natural lighting

To maintain a healthy level of productivity, we should be exposed to daylight during the day as it can help revitalize our energy levels. Allowing natural light into your working space helps maintain our bodies’ circadian rhythm. This is the 24-hour cycle we all experience that affects our day-to-day physical and mental state. It can help us get a good night’s rest, which can help us feel more alert and productive throughout the day.

Getting a good amount of natural light is also proven to reduce fatigue, eye strain and weariness and will leave us feeling refreshed and more positive. This is very beneficial if you are staring at a screen for long periods.

Include other natural elements

Natural lighting is not the only natural element you should include in your entrepreneurial workspace to improve your productivity. Other elements, such as plants, water bodies and wooden décor can also invoke emotions and moods that can help with work efficiency and productivity.

According to 2014 University of Exeter research, productivity increased by 15% when lean working environments are filled with houseplants. This increase was put down to employees engaging more with their surroundings and achieving a greater output as a result. It also boosts focus.

Eliminate clutter

It’s a commonly known thing that being organized can significantly increase productivity. If you ensure that your work area is clean and uncluttered, you are engaging with your surroundings and staying focused on how it looks. Organization items, such as drawers, shelves, folders and cabinets can all help with eliminating clutter.

Stowing away personal gadgets, such as your mobile phone or tablet can also help decrease clutter and without these items on your desk, you should see your productivity rise.

If you are collaborating on projects, eliminating clutter can make it easier to do so. Having an open working space would be ideal for this situation, but it can be harder to keep tidy. Therefore, you must keep on top of this so that your collaboration projects can go as smoothly as possible. Eliminating clutter is also beneficial if there is anyone visiting your entrepreneurial business.
