  4. This is such an important topic and it’s great there are apps out there to ensure your children are safe.

    1. Hi, I appreciate your visit and feedback.

  5. I had no idea that Yahoo still had a messaging app and chatrooms, let alone a dating site. Learn something new everyday

    1. Hi, thanks for dropping by & the feedback.

  6. It’s good there are resources out there to protect teenagers from online predators and it’s good for parents to talk to their kids about the bad guys (but they don’t always listen).
Grown-up adults are also victims of predators and scammers. Everybody is vulnerable and we all have to be alert.

Thank you for the great advice. This is such a scary thing to have to think about, but you can’t be too careful with your kids safety! My son has a smartphone, and the only app he has for social media is snapchat. I hope that by checking it and screening who he invites as friends is enough.

    1. Yes, parents can help guide their kids on how safely use some of these apps otherwise thanks for the feedback.

  8. They need to put this article in the classrooms for teacher! and Parents! This is so crucial for our youth, and adults needless to say.

    1. Hi True, thanks for the feedback.

  9. This is really interesting. I speak to both parents and adults about mental health/illness and social media invariably comes up. Whilst I agree we need better internet/social media safety – the UK Government White Paper has pledged a duty of care – there is something vaguely sinister about having access to your child’s social media particularly without their knowledge. We should also be aware that social media when used appropriately can be good for young people’s and adults mental health. I definitely don’t have the answers but I would advocate better education on internet safety and frank conversations with your children rather than monitoring their use without their knowledge.

    1. Hi Emma, the post shares suggestions, and we appreciate feedback like yours.

  10. As a parent of a teenage boy I can understand why we need to keep an eye on what our kids are doing online, but as a Domestic Violence survivor, this worries me and triggers me a lot. Abusers use these types of apss to monitor and control their victim’s every move. This needs to be seen very carefully

    1. True! Thanks for your feedback.

  11. There are so many apps out there, I imagine parenting teens must feel extremely trying at times! #GlobalBlogging

    1. Hi Keet, thanks for visiting!

  12. Unfortunately, while I was growing up and Facebook was coming up, it was the dating app of the season among teens. Anyway, I still don’t like how people manipulate FaceBook DMs with very stalking messages. Something to actually warn teens about!

    1. True, many teens may fall to these DMs from strange people, hence the need of parents being in control helps prevent such bad cases. Thanks for your comments.

      1. You’re welcome. Absolutely!

    1. Thanks for reading Thomas!

  14. I don’t think it’s helpful to think of social media as dangerous for our kids. It is their culture and just because we didn’t grow up with it doesn’t mean we need to demonize it. We just need to talk to our kids about safe use and monitor it respectfully.

    1. Hi, I don’t think the article is about preventing kids from using social media, but it highlights the dangers that kids can be exposed to when using social media. Most of the time, there is no problem with them using it, but sometimes we may have bad guys out there trying to take advantage of this, hence the need to protect kids.

  16. My kids are only 6, but I already fear what social media will look like for them in 10 years. As a parent, I will need to make sure that I am able to monitor their use and try to instill good values in them.

    1. Glad to know that. Thanks for reading!

This is great advice for parents. At some point there needs to be an element of trust developed between parent and child because when that teen turns 18 he/she is considered an adult and ‘spying’ on them will really not cut it.

    1. I think by 18, they should be considered adults, and some can make informed decisions.

  18. Often the best advice for life applies to work and vice versa, therefore a right perspective.

    1. Well noted. Thanks.

  19. Parents should monitor ALL electronic activity for their kids when they are younger. Kids are digitally savvy so early now, they need monitoring and guidance.

    1. True! Thanks for visiting.

  20. This will be so helpful to parents. I’m going to forward this to somw of my acquaintances/

    1. Thanks Nabanita!

  23. Definitely gotta be on the ball with these sites John. My sister didn’t allow my niece online until she became a teen. Even now, she’s aware of her web surfing habits. My other niece is a toddler but already knows how to do stuff with the phone. Amazing. Thanks for sharing the reminder.

    1. Hi Ryan, Sometimes we have to take proactive steps earlier to avoid some of these problems that many teens encounter online. Education is one way that can help, but few people take this serious. Thanks for your insights.
